Chapter 15

Flashbacks

In school the next day, everyone was talking about the rape. West Chester was a small town, and this type of violent act of violence seldom occurred.

“I heard she was raped by four men,” whispered Josephine.

“No, I heard it was three and they did it at

Everheart Park by the gazebo,” Katherine chimed in.

When Romeo and Hakeem walked into the classroom, everyone became quiet. The story was out. Teachers were aware of the situation and provided safe rooms led by the guidance counselors for anyone who wanted to talk. Romeo and Hakeem were still unsettled about last night and refused talk to anyone about the situation.

“Yo Ro, I am fucking scared bro. I didn’t think Victor had it in him to kill that guy last night.”

Romeo nodded his head and agreed. “There is no turning back now. First Carmel, and now Bubba, I couldn’t sleep and thought about throwing the fuck up several times last night.”

At lunch, Charmaine and a few of her girls walked pass Romeo’s table and gave him a cold stare. Charmaine whispered, “Fuck you,” and gave him the finger.

Normally, Romeo would have given Charmaine the middle finger back and laughed it off, but he was depressed and scared. His mind was racing in a thousand directions. He kept reliving the night and the look on Bubba’s face when Victor pulled the trigger. He continued to have flashbacks and cold sweats.

He thought about telling someone else outside of the crew, but didn’t. He thought about telling his mother, a teacher, a counselor, the principal, or even his sister, but that would violate his oath to the crew. He played with his food till the bell rang. He didn’t eat his turkey sandwich, chips, or drink his milk, which made Coach Paine a little worried.

“Romeo, are you ok? I see that you didn’t eat earlier and you dropped the baton several times, and missed your mark on the long jump,” Coach Paine asked.

Looking for answers and sized Romeo up, Coach Paine placed his hands on Romeo shoulders. “I am going to need you this weekend for the PIAA State Track and Field Championship. Lots of colleges will be there and we need your legs on the 4 X 100 meter relay, 4 x 400 meter relay, the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, and the long jump. Please either tell me what’s wrong or gets some rest.”

Romeo told him, “I am fine coach. I had girl problems this weekend. One of my girls broke up with me and I am a little shook up.”

Coach Paine, feeling relieved, and expressed that he was sorry for his troubles and instructed him to let go of the problem and get some rest. The track meet was in a few days and Coatesville team was W.C East’s greatest competition.

Meanwhile, at the Desplantes' home, Victor picked up Carmel from the hospital. Carmel, still shaken up, wanted to rest in her own bedroom. The idea of being raped, being pregnant, having a diseases, and a violation of her body gave her chills on top of the soreness she was feeling.
